What is speech and language therapy?

What is speech and language therapy?
Nearly 20% of the population may experience communication difficulties at some point in their lives (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, 2019). This can include:

  • Speaking clearly/pronouncing certain sounds
  • Understanding spoken language
  • Using language for speaking
  • Interpreting social situations and cues
  • Interacting successfully with others, so called ‘social skills’

Difficulties in these areas can have a significant impact on a person’s life; socially, emotionally and academically.

As a Speech and Language Therapists I assess speech, language and communication problems in people of all ages and help them to develop the skills to communicate more effectively. I work directly with children and young people and their parents/carers and educators to provide support tailored to individual needs.
